T-Mobile New Horizons IFF announces competition titles

Poland's biggest film festival, the T-Mobile New Horizons IFF in Wrocław (19-29 July) announced the titles in its two main competitions: the New Horizons International Competition (20.000 EUR Prize and distribution guarantee in Poland) and Films On Art International Competition (10.000 EUR Prize and distribution guarantee in Poland).

The Main, New Horizons International Competition, judged by filmmakers Urszula Antoniak (Code Blue), Naomi Kawase (The Mourning Forest), Amat Escalante (Los Bastardos), Lav Diaz (Century of Birthing) and Przemysław Wojcieszek (Secret) will comprise 12 titles, all of which will have their Polish Premieres at the festival.

Titles include the San Sebastan winner Double Steps by Isaki Lacuesta and films starring the Academy Award-winner Melissa Leo (Francine by Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky) and James Franco (Francophrenia by Ian Olds and James Franco).

The Films On Art International Competition, judged by visual artists and filmmakers, James Benning (Ruhr) and Zbigniew Libera, actress and director Susanne Sachsse (Bruce LaBruce's The Raspberry Reich) as well as festival programmers, Rebecca De Pas (FID Marseille) and Sean Farnel includes the latest films by Philippe Grandrieux (It Maybe That Beauty Has Strengthened Our Resolve - Masao Adachi), as well as films involving music bands: Anthony and the Johnsons (Turning by Charles Atlas Antony) and LCD Soundsystem (Shut Up And Play The Hits by Will Lovelace).

The competition titles are:

• Amma Lo-fi / Grandma Lo-Fi: The Basement Tapes of Sigrídur Níelsdóttir by Orri Jónsson, Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir (Island / Denmark 2012)

• As canções / Songs by Eduard Cutinhno (Brazylia 2011)

• Crazy Horse by Frederick Wiseman (France / USA 2011)

• Il se peut que la beauté ait renforcé notre resolution - Masao Adachi / It Maybe That Beauty Has Strengthened Our Resolve - Masao Adachi by Philippe Grandrieux (France 2011)

• Kovasikajuttu / Punk Syndrome by Jukka Kärkkäinen, Jani-Petteri Passi (Finland 2012)

• Low Definition Control - Malfunctions # 0 by Michael Palm (Austria 2011)

• Love Story by Florian Habicht (New Zealand / USA 2011)

• Room 237 by Rodney Ascher (USA 2012)

• Shock Head Soul by Simon Pummel (Nethelands / UK 2011)

• Shut Up And Play The Hits by Will Lovelace, Dylan Southern (UK 2012)

• Turning by Charles Atlas Antony (USA / Dania 2012)

• Zavtra / Tomorrow by Andriej Griazew (Russia 2012)

Films awarded the Grand Prix, Audience Award and Fipresci Award in the New Horizons International Competition and the winner of the Films On Art International Competition are guaranteed all-rights distribution by the New Horizons Association.

The festival has also revealed the Polish Shorts Competition and European Shorts Competition titles. These can be found on the festival website www.nowehoryzonty.pl.

The festival will open on the 19 July with the screening of Michael Haneke's Palme d'Or winning film, Amour (Love).
