Film description

In the film’s opening scene, four-year-old Nana watches a pig being slaughtered. But the gruesome spectacle does not frighten the girl, though the same cannot necessarily be said for the viewer. Nana is told from a child’s perspective, in which death and brutality are not cruel, but simply part of the world in which she lives.

Nana lives with her mother in a dilapidated countryside home, sometimes visiting her grandfather. When Nana’s mother disappears without a trace, the girl is left to fend for herself. Though she is an unusually confident child, we never forget that she is also defenseless. Valérie Massadian constructs a work that is both direct and abstract in its exploration of tensions between the child and adult worlds.
