Return to Burma
Gui lai di ren

Jiun Lu, Shin-Hong Wang

Film description

Return to Burma is a unique opportunity for a close look at life in one of the world’s most isolated societies. The protagonist revisits his village after a decade working abroad, as a political thaw brings hopes of a better life. But aside from government-sponsored songs paying lip service to democratic reform, there are few signs of popular optimism or social mobilization. Conversations turn around miserly wages, dreams of emigrating, and black market trade. The director builds his semi-autobiographical tale in the style of Taiwan New Wave: long takes and static camera work producing a quasi-documentary feel. He neither judges nor goes for emotional pathos, choosing rather to give an authentic portrait of a society in suspension.

Information about director

Midi Z

Born in Burma in 1982, director Midi Z emigrated to Taiwan at the age of 16. He took up film studies while supporting himself from jobs that took him from construction sites to restaurants. After his diploma short film Paloma Blanca made its way into the programs of several festivals, he was admitted into the Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy, founded by director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. In 2008, he was able to revisit his home village for the first time and, three years later, returned once more, this time with camera in hand. Working in secret with a crew of three, Midi Z filmed Return to Burma, his feature debut.
