Film description

I’m a friendly troublemaker. I just want things to happen, so there’s no boredom! – says Tadeusz Konwicki, the subject of the documentary The Passerby – but director Andrzej Titkow may well have said it himself. This lighthearted look at the prolific writer and film director traces Konwicki’s life in his own words against a soundtrack by Polish punk legends Tilt. The effect is a touching reflection on a life in art that includes questions about art itself, doubts about past choices, and genuinely funny anecdotes, like a six-kilometer walk on tiptoes – because the girl he was with was tall. At one point, Konwicki exclaims Well? Why don’t you say something? while looking deadpan into the camera. A philosophical satirist through and through.

Information about director

Andrzej Titkow

Andrzej Titkow was born in Warsaw in 1946. He studied directing at the National Film School in Łódź, later taking up work with Poland’s national television broadcaster in 1972, with the Warsaw Documentary Film Studio in 1973, and with the ‘Perspektywa’ film studio in 1977. Titkow has directed several dozen productions, including documentary and feature films, television series and theater productions, all in addition to writing poetry. He is also an active lecturer. In 2004–2006 he acted as deputy director in charge of documentaries at the TVP broadcasting company.
