New Horizons in Film Language

Sound in Cinema is the theme of the fourth edition of the New Horizons in Film Language education and discussion forum.

For four years running, the New Horizons of Film Language has been revealing filmmaking secrets through demonstrations, lectures and meetings with artists. After editing, cinematography, and production design, we now turn to sound. Ten films carefully selected especially for the festival examine sound issues in the classical and contemporary approaches. In an NHFL exclusive, the program will be accompanied by the Polish premiere of the groundbreaking book Audio-Vision by French composer and cinematic expert, Michel Chion.

The section will open with Jacques Tati's masterpiece Play Time and its many sound gags and anecdotes. There will also be a special screening of two 1980s films - Peter Szulkin's allegorical sci-fi Golem, and Decoder, a cult film about the clash of industrial and muzak by Muscha and Klause Maeck - both with Q&A's by the artists. Also to come: Jonathan Weiss, author of the avant-garde Atrocity Exhibition, an adaptation of a story b JG Ballard (author of Crash) and Ghassan Salhab, a Lebanese director of the film The Mountain. Discussions accompanying these films will focus on asynchronous video and sound editing, the role of sound from outside the frame. Others reveal akuzmonium (Pontypool, dir. Bruce McDonald), fundamental noise (Innocence, dir. Lucile Hadzihalilovic), the hearing perspective (Here... or There?, dir. Siu Pham), voice over, and natural ambient (The Sound of Insects, dir. Peter Liechti). The final special screening will be Wojtek Smarzowski's Rose, with award-winning sound engineer, Jacek Hamela.
