Bill Laswell & The Blixt

About the event

With nearly a thousand recordings to his name, Bill Laswell is not only one of the most prolific musicians of our time, but also ranks among the most talented and influential artist/producers of the modern era. His work is widely credited with having catalyzed New York's independent music scene. Laswell's list of collaborators is a who's who of pioneering music-makers: Tom Cora, Peter Brötzmann, Herbie Hancock, Pete Namlook, Buckethead, DJ Spooky, Mick Jagger, Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, Nils Petter Molvaer and Public Image Limited, to name a few. Bill Laswell is a one-man institution, a musical luminary who transcends easy definitions and boundaries of style and genre. A virtuoso bass player and master producer, he is credited with having revitalized funk, dub, jazz and ambient genres. His contributions to cultural life are widely acknowledged and he is a respected promoter of original, innovative, and unconventional music. His albums - whether as musician or producer - bear his unmistakable mark, which frequently translates into a blend of punk-influenced liveliness and funk dance rhythms. Laswell's versatility has brought him artistic and commercial success in seemingly irreconcilable musical spheres, including heavy metal, hip hop, world music, and many other stops along the way, as well. An inventory of his collaborations, frequently with some of the biggest names in music, would fill pages. Each year sees the release of several albums listing his name in the credits. His versatility is infectious - artists well-established in their genre always seem willing to experiment when Laswell is involved in a project.

Now, Bill Laswell brings his latest project to Wrocław. The Blixt trio, already a sensation on international stages, features Laswell on bass, along with guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and percussionist Morgan Ågren. Raoul Björkenheim is a household name among contemporary jazz aficionados - a long-time collaborator of avant-garde prodigy Edward Vesala, he is the founder of the Krakatau ensemble and is widely regarded as a master whose innovative jazz guitar style has revolutionized the genre. Morgan Ågren is flat-out among the best percussionists working today - at only twenty years of age he was spotted by none other than Frank Zappa, who gave him the opportunity to share the stage with such talents as Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio. Having founded the Mats/Morgan Band when he was only fourteen, Ågren has also played with the bands Kaipa and Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects.

So what is Blixt? A blend of scintillating, explosive energies kept in check by the expert skills of three master musicians. With hardcore-dubbing bass, fusion guitar, and progressive drumming, Blixt sounds like a force of nature unleashed. The buzz surrounding their live shows is electric - audiences talk of waves of hypnotizing sound flowing off the stage. The trio's virtuosity just barely keeps a lid on raw energy as they break all boundaries of form and style, creating a unique sound that is all their own. Blixt is the only band of its kind.
