Film description

When a young child faces an old world, powerful emotions burst forth in a time of great catastrophe. A father and daughter live in isolation, in a wooden home by a river. The setting sun’s light sets the atmosphere. The story follows Hushpuppy, a five year old girl on a mission to save her world from a devastating flood in a visionary tale that pays tribute to the hardships of the American South. This chronicle of a journey that will test the boundaries between man and beast is a visually sophisticated and hypnotic film about a child’s struggle with her demons that offers up a modern-day legend about death and life in a post-apocalyptic dreamworld. It gets under your skin, taps into your soul, and lights the imagination.

Benh Zeitlin

Born in 1982 in New York, USA. Raised in Sunnyside section of Queens (NYC). His parents Steve Zeitlin and Amanda Dargan are both urban folklorists who founded and run the popular nonprofit City Lore organization in NYC. Benh is a graduate of Hastings-on-Hudson High School and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He helped start the Court 13 independent filmmaking collective in 2004, and moved to New Orleans after during the making of his third short film there, Glory at Sea (2008). His first feature, Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), received support from the Sundance Labs and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and was awarded Palme d'Or for the Best First Film in Cannes IFF 2012.
