CastJean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert, Alexandre Tharaud awardsCannes IFF 2012 – Golden Palm Film descriptionThe tale of an aging couple: spouses, companions, friends. Their relationship is nearly symbiotic – they are two integral parts of one living organism and both are essential to its harmonious existence. But the calm order of things, built daily, over long years, is destroyed by a solitary event. At first, the effects of Anne’s stroke are barely noticeable. But soon, hopes of improvement will come up against cold realities. The upheaval of Anne and Georges’ life is contained within the walls of their home, whose space is director Michael Haneke’s petri dish for experimenting with the question what next?. In Love, Haneke tames the fear of death that is indelibly inscribed in every one of us. He does so earnestly, without the rose-colored glasses of mainstream attempts at the theme. In this, the most human of his films, he examines a love that is stronger even than death. Residents of a thoroughly secular France, the couple likely did not kneel at an altar to make vows of for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. Yet, faith notwithstanding, this story proves the lasting truth of the declaration with deeply sincere emotion.
