Film description

It has been said that Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road took the temperature of an era and recorded the change in the life of a nation . In his film, director Walter Salles attempts to follow the novel’s letter and spirit, beginning with the chance meeting of aspiring writer Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty. Dean has the wind in his hair, adventure in his bones, rebellion in his blood as he races through life with his equally devil-may-care girlfriend, Marylou. This spontaneous gang heads off on a journey across the vastness of America, without any goal, only to move, usually without money, and sometimes against the law. They steal cars and catch-as-catch-can – the only thing that matters is to keep moving, running from everything they despise, like boredom, material needs, family obligations, and social expectations. Sal heads off on this feverish chase with the baggage on an internal conflict, incompatible desires and his bashfulness, which he tries to shed through narcotic stupors and erotic raptures, ultimately breaking through to the doors of no-holds-barred adventure – an adventure he wants to greedily consume with all his senses.

Information about director

Walter Salles

Walter Salles (born in 1956, Rio de Janeiro) spent his childhood in France and USA and returned to his native Brazil as a teenager. He began work in the film industry by maing musical documentaries, e.g. Marisa Monte and Chico – O País da Delicadeza Perdida. Salles co-directed his feature-length debut Terra Estrangeira with Daniela Thomas. His next film, Central Station won the Golden Bear at the 1998 Berlinale. He has also coproduced films such as City of God, Madame Satã, Suely in the Sky and Lion’s Den.
