Film description

Room 237 is a brilliant, fetishistically detailed examination of Stanly Kubrick’s The Shining, a quintessential piece of suspense horror, widely acknowledged as one of the most intriguing and mysterious works in the long history of cinema. Innumerable theories abound as to the hidden meanings of Kubrick’s masterpiece. Some have claimed that the film is a metaphorical allegory on the Holocaust and the decimation of Native American populations. Those with a bent for conspiracy theories would have it that it actually points to the Apollo moon missions having been a hoax. And psychoanalytical interpretations claim that the film is saturated with subliminal erotic motifs. Director Rodney Ascher takes apart the convoluted labyrinth of speculations in a neat deconstruction over nine thematic chapters. Meticulously analyzing the film’s fragments – in slow motion, in loops, with diagrams of the famed tricycle’s path, with set reconstructions – Ascher’s documentary quickly dispels initial doubts about The Shining’s depth as a work of film art. By the end, we cannot but hail the genius that was Stanley Kubrick.
