Film description

Director Sergei Loban’s epic but light-hearted work in four chapters entitled Love, Friendship, Respect, and Cooperation. The main characters in one episode become background figures in the next, but all will come together in the final show of the title. The theme linking the chapters is a timeless search for harmony in human affairs, but the positive intonation of the chapter titles is tinted with a large dose of irony. Loban’s hapless characters strive but fail quite miserably at attaining human ideals, but they nevertheless battle through their own weaknesses and prejudices to make acts of humane compassion. At over three hours, this is a colorful film that abounds in imaginative characters, esthetic choices and narrative themes.
