The End
dir. Christopher Maclaine / USA 1953 / 35’
subtitles: Polish only

Film description

The End is a beat poem with many parallel but inevitable endings. It shows the final day in the lives of six people intending to commit suicide, either literally or figuratively, though the opening sequence mushroom cloud and voiceover leave little doubt that we are witness to collective suicide of the human race. The half-dead and half-living self-killers share the same disease as all of society: consumerist dehumanization, Cold War paranoia, and terrifying alienation. Maclaine hysterically frightened contemporary audiences with his anxious, amphetamine narration, apocalyptic visions and dour feel.

Information about director

Christopher Maclaine

Christopher Maclaine is a beat poet who spent the 1940s and 1950s living in San Francisco and made four films before succumbing completely to amphetamine addiction. Many consider his films masterpieces of American avant-garde filmmaking. The End is the longest and the first American film with the atomic bomb as thematic background, produced ten years prior to works by Stanley Kubrick, Jack Arnold, and Sidney Lumet.
