Film description

Bohdan Sláma lives up to his reputation as one of the most exciting filmmakers in Czech cinema. Shown at Sundance, Four Suns is a film about everyday realities tinted with marijuana smoke and New Age mysticism. The director portrays his characters as more than just colorful personalities as he explores their wanderings through an existential hinterland in search of spiritual direction. A master of character study, Sláma mixes equal doses of empathy, detachment, humor and compassion. The director clearly has a sense of humor about his own work, as well, which comes in the form of winks to audiences, especially those versed in auteur cinema – the sequence foretelling an impending apocalypse is an exquisite pastiche of Tarkovsky’s The Mirror.
