The Fourth Dimension
dir. Jan Kwieciński, Harmony Korine, Aleksei Fedorchenko / Poland, USA, Russia 2012 / 106’
subtitles: Polish and English

Val Kilmer, Igor Sergeev, Darya Ekamasova, Tomasz Tyndyk, Justyna Wasilewska, Paweł Smagała

Film description

A swollen and ageing Val Kilmer plays a new age preacher before a small town crowd; an academic who lives in bloc housing cuts himself off from the world while working on a machine that looks into the future; a group of young people traverse an empty village when sirens suddenly wail hailing the start of some disaster.

Three directors from three different countries, three stories, and three decrepit and depressing settings in the fourth dimension where all attempt to cheat time, by suspending, reversing or accelerating it, but remain trapped in the now, where nostalgia, humor and fantasy mix into a surprising whole.

Information about directors

Aleksei Fedorchenko

Alexei Fedorchenko (born in 1966 in Sol-Iletsk), graduated from the Ural University of Technology in 1988 and began working at the film studio in Sverdlovsk. He began by directing documentaries and achieved acclaim with his mockumentary First on the Moon. His other films include the fairytale comedy-drama The Railway and Silent Souls, the latter of which has been compared to films by Tarkovsky.

Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine (born in 1973 in California) never graduated because he wanted to skateboard instead. He debuted in the film industry with his script Kids (1995), directed by controversial photographer Larry Clark. Korine made his directorial debut two years later with the surreal Gummo, acclaimed and derided as the worst film ever. Other films include the Dogma ’95-like Julien Donkey-Boy, nostalgic Mister Lonely and his most radical work, Trash Humpers, where a band of degenerates destroy home equipment and copulate with garbage cans. His work is exceptional for its specific humor and small-town settings.
